The term covers a wide range of tools. At one end are basic quiz builders. At the other are institutional assessment systems designed for high-stakes remote testing with proctoring and security controls. What most of them share, regardless of where they sit on that spectrum, is a common assumption: that assessment means presenting questions and recording answers.

That assumption shapes what gets measured.

What Most Online Assessment Platforms Actually Measure

The dominant format across online assessment platforms is the multiple-choice question. It is easy to create, grades itself, and scales without any additional effort from the instructor. For institutions managing hundreds or thousands of students, that is a meaningful practical advantage.

The problem is what it measures. Research on Bloom's Taxonomy consistently shows that most multiple-choice formats operate at the lower cognitive levels: recall and recognition. A student who can identify the correct answer from four options may have no ability to explain the concept, apply it in a new context, or detect when it is being used incorrectly. The score looks the same either way.

A 2021 study in Advances in Health Sciences Education examining open-book medical examinations found that access to online resources had a much larger effect on performance for recall-based questions than for questions requiring understanding or application. In other words, recall questions are vulnerable precisely because the information they test can be looked up. Understanding cannot.

The Gap Between a Score and Understanding

A score produced by a standard online assessment platform tells you how many questions a student answered correctly. It does not tell you whether the student understood the material, could explain it, or would recognize a misconception about it.

This gap matters more in some contexts than others. For a low-stakes knowledge check, a quiz score is a reasonable proxy. For a course that requires students to actually apply concepts, carry them forward to the next unit, or defend them in a professional setting, a multiple-choice score is a weak signal of whether that is likely to happen. The authors attributed this partly to technical constraints: platforms built around single-choice and multiple-choice formats simply cannot capture whether a student can construct an explanation from scratch.

The distinction is between recognizing understanding and producing it. Most online assessment tools test recognition. Producing understanding requires a different kind of task entirely.

What it Looks Like to Measure Understanding Online

Measuring understanding online is harder than measuring recall, but it is not impossible. The tasks that reveal understanding share a common characteristic: they require the student to generate something, not select it.

Explaining a concept in plain language, identifying a flaw in an argument, applying a principle to an unfamiliar scenario, or teaching a concept to someone who does not know it: these are all generative tasks. They expose gaps that multiple-choice questions routinely miss, because generating an accurate explanation requires a student to hold the concept together from the inside, not just recognize it from the outside.

The most rigorous version of this is teaching. When a student must explain a concept clearly enough for someone else to understand and use it, every gap in their knowledge becomes visible immediately. This is the principle behind the Feynman Technique, and it is what separates conceptual understanding assessment from standard online testing.
